I live in Tokyo now but most of my friends and family do not. The main idea here is that I can tell these people about interesting things that happen and are seen.

Yesterday I became an uncle!

Eleanor Melanie Vincent was squeezed out of my big sister at the pretty civilized time of 7:35 PM. Early reports indicate that she is a baby.

Another thing of note that happened yesterday - I rode 60 stories in an elevator decorated with images of dolphins swimming through outer space, jostling with various gas giants that were depicted with an unrealistic clutter of rings - the cab suffused in pelagic light and the kind of wafting mood music that I associate with slightly incompetent massages.

It was as though I had been briefly transported to an alternate reality in which Seal's career had been taken extremely seriously and had ushered in an Aquarian age.

You can get an impression of the experience if you watch this and imagine that instead of Seal in the video it is me, and instead of singing and pretending to play a loom I am just looking around in kind of an alarmed way.

Firstly, congratulations on the uncleship. Fame and fortune can surely not be far behind?

Secondly, your blog is truly transcendent.

Thirdly, have a choice Christmas, such as it exists in Japan.

Thanks mate, on all three counts.

All the best to you and yours likewise.

In terms of decorations and shit Christmas is a big deal here, but it ain't a holiday.

Now the question is what kind of uncle you want to be. Amandas sister had a bay-bee so i was, briefly, some kind of uncle. I planned to be the uncle that let you sit on his lap and drive his HQ Holden down the motorway or shoot a rifle at tin cans on a fence.

Hey have a great Monday (or Chrimbo or Kwanzaa or whatever the hell they're celebrating over there). We've rediscovered your Chrimbo mix from last year so it's been getting a thrashing in the car over the past couple of weeks.

Off to Melbourne in a few hours. Nervous about the flight but very happy to be getting back home for a rest.

Anyway talk soon and have lotsa fun with Dave.
